Subject: rustic wood grain

Hi!I'd like to try the rustic wood grain technique on my paneling using red or black paint,I haven't decided yet.Do,I need to use a grey tinted primer for either of these colors?Also,can this technique be done using either of these colors?I don't want it to look pink,if I use red or grey if I use black.Thanks!
