  Painting over gesso surfaces.

Hand-painted Delft tiles

The loose un-even quality of this faux technique makes painted Delft tiles an ideal decorative effect for the beginner or inexperienced do-it-yourselfer.

Irregular lines and hand painted renderings add character and old world charm, easily achieved without any prior painting experience.

I am painting a mural on a kitchen wall in my office. I painted the entire wall an acrylic base (off white). My mural will only take up the middle of the wall. Can I apply the gesso (to prime for the mural) over the new acrylic paint or do I have to sand that area first?

If you are painting your mural using latex paints, and the surface is in good condition, you should be able to paint right over the white latex paint without using gesso at all. If you want to use Gesso, which acts as a primer and builds up body for the mural surface on your wall, then use acrylic gesso. You can apply the acrylic gesso right over the latex paint and should have no problems.
