Masking tip:
Always test an area to be taped before beginning the masking job. Wallpaper is particularly susceptible to tearing. Lacquer and varnish surfaces on furniture may come off easily with the tape and the item could be severely damaged.

Finishing Kitchen Cabinets

"I have painted my kitchen cabinets matte white and would like to put some color on them. Do I use a wash or glaze and what is the difference?"

KATHY

A wash and a glaze can be the same thing. Typically the difference is that washes are just water and paint, while a glaze is water, paint and medium call ‘glazing liquid’ or ‘Scumble Glaze’. This extra medium adds a transparent thickness that the paint holds onto and creates a glaze that has more substance than just a wash. The drying time of a glaze is longer, making it easier to manipulate and create a nice look.

For working on cabinets, a glaze works best. You will be able to easily apply it to the cabinets’ surface. There are numerous tutorials on this site for different types of treatments you can use, including the Furniture Antiquing  step by step tutorial, ideally suited for kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities and almost any piece of furniture.

Also try Striee glazing, Dragging techniques , Rag rolling or Color washing. Visit the Glazing techniques basics tutorial for general information on glazing.

It is best to glaze or wash over an eggshell or satin sheen paint, rather than a matte or flat sheen.

Aluminum Leaf

Dutch Gold or
composition leaf

Aluminum Leaf imitates the illusion of genuine Silver, at a fraction of the cost. Each individual sheet is bigger and easier to handle then its genuine counter part.

Purchase Genuine Silver Leaf

The same applies for 'Dutch Gold', or 'Composition Leaf'. But due to the large brass content, this imitation gold must have a sealer applied to prevent tarnishing, unlike genuine gold leaf.
