Antique Plaster Effects
artSparx has created a 3 stage step-by-step
tutorial series. Series 1 begins with basic plaster
application, our 2nd series illustrates antique glazing
and plaster distressing methods, culminating in the final
fresco simulation series 3, hand-painted elements. You can
complete each tutorial as a finish and style in it's own
right. Or, depending on your interests and style needs,
combine the tutorials to achieve the hand-painted fresco
appearance that will bring your environment to life.

Tuscan Style |
|
Design Style Feature

Tuscan style evolved through layers of
history, taking cues from the earliest Etruscan metal craft and
pottery, and of course, from the sumptuous world of the Italian
Renaissance. In Tuscany one finds frescoes, cracked and worn by
time, still vibrant with original pigment, depicting ancient
deities and the decadence of the late Roman empire.

Masking tip:
Always test
an area to be taped before beginning the masking job. Wallpaper is particularly
susceptible to tearing. Lacquer and varnish surfaces on furniture may come off
easily with the tape and the item could be severely damaged.

Fixatives serve
many purposes
and are a
crucial part of
almost every
interior &
exterior plaster
and stucco
application.
This first
purpose of any
Fixative is to
provide
anchorage
between the
surface and the
medium. The
second attribute
of a Fixative is
consolidation.
Fixatives have
the ability to
absorb into the
surface and fill
in particular
areas that
primers can't.
Depending on the
type of reaction
you want,
specific
fixatives can be
used to
completely block
these pores,
allow some
transpiration
(exchange of the
elements) or
completely allow
it. A fixative
such as an
Acrylic
Fixative,
will consolidate
the surface,
allow some
transpiration,
and provide
excellent
anchorage. A
Solvent Fixative
will
penetrate into
these pores and
completely seal
them. These are
the two most
common of
fixatives
offered by
artSparx.com. |
The second and
not always
necessary
procedure when
preparing
surfaces is to
establish a well
primed surface.
When applying
decorative
plasters, a coat
of
Quartz
Paint Primer
is often the
best solution.
Quartz Paints
have a porrus
surface, which
absorb the
plasters at a
perfect rate.
Other standard
acrylic or PVA
primers work in
disposition and
fight the
plasters
absorbtion. When
applying
plasters over a
Quartz Primed
surface, the
applicator will
immediately
notice changes
in his spreading
ability, his
covering power,
and even his
final effects.
Primers are not
necessary in all
applications.
For example,
MamoFloat,
Stucco Rustico,
Marmorino and
other lime based
applications
react perfectly
with the
fixatives. |
|
When finished
with any
application,
lightly sand all
corners and
moldings so they
are free of
particles that
may get snagged
and pulled off.
For previously
painted
surfaces, it is
a good idea to
sand the surface
with 400 grit
sandpaper before
applying
fixative.
For
particularly
absorbent
mineral, cement,
or stucco
surfaces, apply
Normalizing
Fixative by Max
Meyer to
completely block
over absorption
is a good idea.
Normalizing
Fixatives will
still allow the
surface to
"breath."
Only apply
Rustico and
MarmoFloat
exterior
applications
over properly
scratch-coated
surfaces or over
properly
constructed EIFS
surfaces.
To completely
seal any
textured or
aggregate
application, use
SIL 707 by
Baldini Vernici.
SIL is a cement
sealer.
When
self-tinting
product, be sure
to tint the
product with
it's proper
colorants. All
Lime Based
products require
oxide pigments.
Refer to each
products
technical sheet
before
application.
Before
starting any
project, be sure
to test and
experiment with
the finish on
relevant
surfaces before
applying it. The
procedures and
applications are
only
recommendations
and suggestions
developed to the
best of our
knowledge. It is
not to state
that
applications
will always
replicate
themselves
through the
hands of every
applicator.
For a
perfectly smooth
surface, always
apply fixatives
and quartz with
a foam roller.
Quartz Paint and
Acrylic Fixative
can be combined
applied as one
coat. To achieve
this, dilute the
Acrylic Fixative
to 400% by
volume with
water, and
dilute the
Quartz Paint 75%
by volume with
water. Combine
the two mixtures
to a 50-50
mixture. Spread
with a white
foam roller. |

Technical Sheet
MSDS Information
|
|
|
|
Lets take a look
at a common
preparation
procedure for an
interior
Venetian Plaster
application.
Here, we want
the smoothest
surface possible
for a smooth
application, and
a strong bond
for a long
lasting
guarantee. |
 |
Step
1.
Apply a coat of
Acrylic Fixative
to the surface
using a quarter
inch roller. If
aiming to
completely
water-proof the
surface, instead
of Acrylic
Fixative, use
Solvent
Fixative. This
in turn will
block any
ability for the
surface to
"breath." |
|
|
|
 |
Step
2.
After the
fixative has
dried, apply a
coat of Fine
Quartz Paint
Primer to the
surface with a
quarter inch
roller. Dilute
the Quartz Paint
up to 25% by
volume. Quartz
Paint may be
applied by
spray. If so,
dilute to 40% by
volume. |
|
|
|
 |
Step
3.
Inspect the
entire area and
scrape off any
left-over
particles,
drips, or debris
with a spatula
or blade. |
|
|
|
 |
Step
4.
For corners with
metal bases,
sand to the
metal and coat
with Acrylic
Fixative or
spray with BIN
(Available at
Home Depot).
This will
further protect
all corners and
edges from
possible damage. |
