Why join the artSparx Gallery?

Through amorphic and abstract language Petrov reveals the importance of

historical amnesia today: how former countries or civilizations and events

have vanished like a species. Assembled like puzzles, the compositions float

in and out of the past in layers of paint, as opposed to moving across the canvas

left to right. Imagine ancient posters or notices of events torn away and

pasted over repeatedly for hundreds of years. Colorful fragments echo hunting

scenes or cave drawings of battles amidst scattered fossilized vertabrae.

Each painting is a frozen world thawed out that re-animates the past.

Andrei Petrov:
Born in Washington, D.C. on March 19, 1966 Andrei found himself surrounded by artists: his mother, an actress, his father, a set designer, and his uncle, a Surrealist artist.
Andrei's first drawings were made with colored markers and exhibited an early grasp of some important artistic concepts. At age 7, he drew a theatre auditorium with a balcony in linear perspective as viewed from the stage looking out. Gradually, he progressed using more difficult media such as oils and watercolors: landscapes and still-lifes through his studies at The LaGuardia High School For Music and Art in New York City.
The State University at Purchase and New Paltz provided Andrei with the freedom to explore the correlation of art, music and nature. He realized that the layers of sound produced by orchestra could be translated into colors and forms to express certain feelings.
As in nature his paintings are rarely symmetrical, but always carefully balanced.
Andrei believes art should be interpreted, but not explained in a fashion that would detract from the mystery. Artists such as Dali, Magritte, Edward Hopper and others have influenced Andrei's vision.
